Rijksmuseum

museum

The Netherlands' national museum, housing 8,000 objects across 80 galleries spanning 800 years of Dutch art and history. The crown jewel is Rembrandt's Night Watch (1642), displayed in a purpose-built gallery. Vermeer's Milkmaid and four other Vermeers live here too. The Gothic Revival building by Pierre Cuypers opened in 1885 — Protestants hated its Catholic-looking design, Catholics hated its Protestant architect. A 10-year, 375-million-euro renovation completed in 2013 restored the original interior light. The passage through the building is a public bicycle path.

The 'I Amsterdam' sign was removed from the front in 2018, but the museum garden behind is a peaceful free area with sculptures. Buy timed tickets online to skip the queue.

Van Gogh Museum

museum

Houses the world's largest collection of Van Gogh works — over 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 700 letters. Vincent van Gogh created roughly 2,100 artworks in just ten years (1880-1890) before his death at 37. Key works here include Sunflowers, The Bedroom, and Almond Blossom (painted for his newborn nephew). The museum was designed by Gerrit Rietveld and opened in 1973. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime — The Red Vineyard — for 400 francs. His brother Theo's widow Johanna preserved the collection and built his posthumous fame.

Absolutely book timed tickets online — walk-up queues can exceed 2 hours. Friday evenings the museum stays open late with a bar and DJ in the lobby.
